Consuming Kids

Consuming Kids is an in-depth look at how children are manipulated and exploited, every moment of every day, to become the best consumers possible.

With more than 52 million kids under 12 in the USA, American businesses have an unprecedented and enormous new demographic to target. Today, businesses have their eye on kids because they spend more than $40 billion dollars a year on clothes, electronics, movies, toys, snack foods, etc. However, marketing executives are also focused on the adult spending that kids directly influence – an estimated $700 billion a year.

Deemed their ‘purchasing power’ and ‘purchasing influence’, advertisers are focused on targeting an enormous range of products towards kids. Surprisingly enough, children have an influence on the holidays taken, cell phones purchased, computers bought, restaurant picks and even the decision of what family car to purchase. Marketing companies have studied the ‘Nagging Factor” to determine how many times children need to nag, or how many temper tantrums they need to have, and at what velocity, to ensure parents give in to a purchase demand. “Kids have a lot of power in the economy and advertisers know it and they are going after the kids in a way that is unprecedented,” explains Susan Linn. “This generation of children is being marketed to as never before."They are being marketed to through product placement, viral marketing, brand licensing, marketing in schools, television shows, DVDs, the internet, cellphones, there are so many more ways to market to children that there is a brand in front of a child every moment of every day. Whether it is a cereal, fast food meal tie-ins, bedsheets, lunch boxes, t-shirts and sneakers, children are subjected to brand bombardment and manipulation every waking moment of their young lives.

Poland is marking its second day of national mourning for the 96 victims of Saturday's plane crash in western Russia.
The Polish President Lech Kaczynski, his wife, parliamentarians, security chiefs and the governor of the national bank were all killed in the crash.
The Polish government plane was carrying leaders from across national public life, who had been due to attend a memorial for the Polish victims of a World War II massacre by Soviet secret police at Katyn in the Smolensk region.
On the evening of the crash, the BBC's Julian Marshall spoke to the Polish Foreign Minister, Radoslaw Sikorski.

The Russian President Dmitri Medvedev has declared Monday an official day of mourning with flags flying at half-mast and television channels cancelling all entertainment programmes.

'The plane caught fire after the crash. Teams began attempting to pull out passengers from the badly damaged airplane,' said a Polish Foreign Ministry spokesman in Warsaw.
Poland's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Piotr Paszkowski, said there were 89 people on the passenger list but one person had not shown up.
'We still cannot fully understand the scope of this tragedy and what it means for us in the future. Nothing like this has ever happened in Poland,' Paszkowski said. 'We can assume with great certainty that all persons on board have been killed.'
The Queen led tributes today to the president and his wife in a message of condolence where she described her "sorrow" and sent her "deepest sympathy" to the government and the people of Poland.

Macbeth's Morality

At the beginning of the book, Macbeth was best friends with Banquo and they were extremely close meaning that they would have done anything for one another. I didn't expect Macbeth to ask people to kill his best friend. If Banquo and Macbeth really were best friends, Banquo wouldn't say anything about what Macbeth did. After the murder, Macbeth became obsessed with what he had done. He couldn't get it out of his head, and kept over analyzing and he let his paranoia take control of his actions. He was so scared of being accused of murderer, that he hired other people to do his horrible deeds, so that he would be safe from even more guilt.

Captains Letter

Dear Mom,
I was wounded by the Norwegians whilst helping Duncan’s son Malcom escape since capture by the Irish. Macbeth was such a good fighter; he was able to kill over 200 people. He managed to cut a soldier in half during one of our battles. Macbeth is very brave and strong. I don’t think he’d ever not do something because he’s scared of the consequences. He never has guilt, and is never influenced by other. I have so much respect for him. He is a true man mom, you would like him.

Love,
Your Son, the Captain.
